Basically, the USR modems are very friendly to cc:Mail
and the &F1 profile requires almost no modifications. I recommend
USR Sportster modems for use with cc:Mail.
The string in the last note is correct but USR has made our lives
even easier. If you have &F1 you don't need &B1 (fixed DTE
speed or serial port rate -- &F1 default), &H1 (transmit on
CTS/hardware flow control -- &F1 default), &R2 (receive on
RTS/hardware flow control -- &F1 default), &A3 (protocol indicators
in CONNECT string, e.g., LAPM, etc. -- &F1 default), or X4 default
result codes.
I haven't had a need to manually disable MNP5 (&K3) myself. According
to cc:Mail you do need &S1 so the modem controls DSR (the sending
modem automatically raises DSR high whenever it has data to send).
Personally, I prefer to shorten the dialing tones to speed the connect.
Anything over about 44 milliseconds should work fine S11=44). You
might need extra long tones (i.e., S11=100) if you have a slow phone
switch or if you're dialing Internationally.
If you're tuning your modem string, you may also want to shorten the
pauses so that you can fine tune the number of pauses and shave seconds
off the dialing time (after setting S8=1, use three 1 second pauses
rather than 2 two second ones, etc.). This last bit is better for
Mobile users, especially using calling cards (as I do), or testing
modems.
At some point there should have be an E0 (do not echo commands) and
an S0=0 (pick up immediately on ring -- should not be necessary).
Both Q0 (display result codes) and V1 (verbal result codes), however,
are &F1 defaults.
I've standardized on USR Sportsters because they seem to be the most
trouble-free connecting just about anything to anything.

Here is a string that I have hammered out, it seems
to work OK for us. (On the Sportster 28.8 External). Pretty much the
string is the same but instead of trusting the Defaults, I specifically
tell it what I want. The s11 slows down the touch tone dial speed.
57600/LOCK
MODEM/AT&F1&B1&H1&R2&S1&A3&K3X4S11=100
Also, check the dipswitches on the back of the modem:
ROM BIOS:
ATI7 = SUPERVISOR REV 6.0.4 11/30/94 or later
DSP REV 1.0.5 11/29/94 or later
SWITCHES: (On Back Of Modem)
FFNF NFNN
F=OFF=UP
N=ON=DOWN
Let me know if it is better, worse, or no different for you...

I, too, am having the same trouble with cc:Mail Mobile
but can use the modem for other Web functions with no problems. Please
send to list if anyone knows the magic formula.

I have a USR 28.8 Dual Standard Courier PCMCIA (PC
card) which I am having trouble with cc:Mail Mobile. I got the latest
mdm files from Lotus's web site, but it still hasn't helped.
I have not had one single good connection. I can use the modem for
lots of other tasks (PPP, Compuserver, AOL, etc).
Any ideas?
Thanks

I work with one of our subsidiaries on setting up
that modem. I'm waiting for them to get back to me on the string we
set up. We had to deviate from the Lotus recommendation. As soon as
I hear, I'll send the string to the List.

Is anyone using US Robotics Sportster 28.8
external modems on cc:Mail routers. I'm having a recurring problem
of the modem not going back on hook after the call terminates. I would
really appreciate any information you can provide. I would really
appreciate someone could send me their setup string. I checked the
latest Lotus approved string which is "AT&F1&S1"
but this isn't working very well.
I'm also having problems getting a Hayes Optima 28.8 to connect to
the Sportster. Both ends are running router v5.11.
Thanks for the help.
